Sustainably
Working as sustainably as possible, from packaging to pesticides. It is one of our main drivers. We recycle raw materials, generate our own energy and are sustainably certified. We strive for a maximum circular production process. In this way, we work on sustainable products for our customers.
Own energy supply
We generate our own energy with our two combined heat and power units (CHPs). We use the heat that is released in the greenhouses. We supply the surplus of the generated electricity back to the grid, to supplement it when there is a shortage of electricity generated from solar or wind energy. With our annual production we provide all households in Maasdijk with electricity for two years. This amounts to more than 4000 households annually.
Climate control
We tackle diseases and animal pests by controlling the climate inside the greenhouses. For example, we do not have to use crop protection agents during cultivation. The crop protection programme ensures a sustainable approach and we use natural enemies where necessary.
Saving energy
Growing crops energy-efficiently and at the same time achieving optimal production: that is what the New Way of Growing is all about. By applying this we save 15% energy. For example, we use no fewer than 3 screen cloths. By using these correctly, we prevent radiation from the cold greenhouse roof and save heat.
OCAP
We are part of the OCAP network. CO2 is captured at Shell Pernis and Alco, among others, and supplied to us as a nutrient for our Phalaenopsis. This way we do not have to burn natural gas unnecessarily.
Closed cultivation system
A new self-invented development at Maarel Orchids is the collection and recycling of the condensation water from the cooling installation. As a result, we discharge 10,000 m3 less water into the sewer every year. In addition, we recycle rain and irrigation water, so that we are largely self-sufficient. We also recycle our own wastewater, filtering out the used fertilisers and reusing them.
Recycling.
We reduce and separate our waste and almost all residual flows are processed into new products. Our partner is committed to recycling 100% of waste and ensuring a closed chain. They are working on a support plan dedicated to reuse, recycling and preventing waste.
FSC
Our plants grow on tree bark, which we use to fill the pots. This product ensures proper drainage and sufficient air for the roots. The tree bark comes with an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) label, which means it comes from forests that are guaranteed to be sustainably preserved for future generations.
Sustainable packaging
Our trays are made from recycled plastic, the labels are made from wood fibres and have the FSC quality mark. The compostable coating makes the label water-repellent and plastic-free. We therefore do not opt for the cheapest packaging materials, but also make balanced choices here.
